I come here every week. Nice workers. Burritos always are on point and delicious. Never had any complains.

Nicest staff anywhere! Our car died in the parking lot and they were very understanding and helpful while we made arrangements.

Not sure how management of Taco Burrito King is okay with this location tarnishing it's name and reputation. In all honestly, without the TBK label, I wouldn't be so bitter and upset about this location's business. The TBK's I've been to prior to the opening of this location are quick, efficient, and precise in the art of late night burrito production. At the Harlem Ave location, there's an almost eerie level of consistency you get - same employees, same level of burrito deliciousness, same speed & professionalism of employees, etc. Unfortunately this is overwhelmingly not the case at the Des Plaines location. Employees have always seem inconvenienced by the presence of patrons and have generally been pretty cold for no apparent reason. My order is always very easy and straight forward - a burrito with everything on it. You'd think this would be pretty hard to fuck up but you'd be wrong. More times than not something is missing - even when I'm the only person they need to cook for. I'm pretty much a huge pushover when it comes to the service industry so most of my experiences at this location involve me staring at a sad, half-assed burrito that's missing ingredients wondering where I went wrong and why I didn't just go to the Harlem location. This place needs some polishing - until then, 2 stars.

Went there today for the Carne Asada dinner special and the carne Asada was so overdone it was horrible.. Ive been visiting this place since they opened but very dissapointing today.. The cook was rushing not paying attention to the steak.. Like your food but will never order this again. We have come here many times and food will never be as good as the Harlem and Higgins Location!! Please fix this place!! New Management soon please!!:(

    (1)
  • Rich B.

The food was not what I expected here at the Des Plaines TBK. The food lacks flavor, and just tastes very bland. If you want some decent TBK, you would be better off either going to the Harlem & Higgins location, or the Belmont & Harlem location.

    (2)
  • Michael W.

They must have been reading these reviews because all of those problems were not apparent when I went. The food had good flavor and the staff was very friendly. I went with a family of 4 adults and 2 children. There was a slight mistake on our entree and they fixed it without hassle or a wait. It's a solid place for the price and food.

This place is newly opened, when I first walked in, I was pleased with the layout, then quickly noticed all the dirt in the place. The floors and rugs were dirty, the stainless steel cabinet that the soda machine sits on has fingermarks all over the door, tables were not cleaned off etc. Its a shame that a new place would look like this so quick. Youre better off going down the road to las asadas. And the worst part is there were NO customers in the place, so no excuse for not cleaning.

  • David S.

I was driving down Oakton on my way to Las Asadas. I was at the light at Mt. Prospect Rd and saw Taco Burrito King. Wow! I used to eat at their location on Touhy in Niles and the food was great! Boy, was I disappointed at this location. I had a steak burrito and it was not good. Did this place go down hill or is it just the location. Let's hope they get it together and keep some consistency between locations. For now, I'll stick with Las Asadas.

  • Alex S.

Best burritos at this location compared to other tbk. Also, very friendly staff and clean restaurant.

    (5)
  • Kevin L.

Best tacos above the border! Ask for Evelyn. She'll take care of you!

    (5)
  • Jonathan C.

Please note that my review is biased and a five star rating on account that I've only had their food under the influence and never sober. The salty goodness of their nachos, burritos, and quesadillas just melt in your mouth after a handful of drinks and make the meal quite palatable and delicious. I recall getting my meal rather quickly around 3 AM. Speedy.

  • HG C.

This place blows. The food was flavorless and low quality. The kid working the grill handled raw fish with his bare hands and then grabbed bread for a torta. The food was garbage and that's exactly where it went. F*CK this place

  • Mike P.

A great big fresh made to order burrito! Was very tasty and enjoyable. Way better than the franchise places like Mo's, Willy's, Qdoba, etc. Very reasonably priced. I'm a fan and would come back.

So I was actually really excited when they first opened this location because the one I used to go to in the city was pretty good. And of course the late hours! I've tried it a few times since it's really close to work but every time we go I get the same result. It's not horrible, especially for Mexican in the area but it lacks the flavor, the spices, etc. It's overall taste is bland. Their horchata is pretty good but it doesn't make up for their taste. Service is pretty quick but it can get crowded very quickly. I called ahead and it worked out fine, good thing because their lot is small and can be difficult to get in and out of when crowded.

  • Mike A.

Had the steak tacos. They were ok. They were definitly bland.. also had a tamlae and it was dry and hard. The place seemed to be fairly clean.

I should have read the reviews first. I thought of the TBK near UIC which stays open all night to serve drunk college kids with their amazingly authentic quesadillas. On first glance this TBK is very clean and modern. the food actually looks very nice when it first comes out. Then the positives stop, we had a burrito, nachos, torta and guac n chips. The chips which are bought form a vendor were the only positive, and even they were mediocre. The food is just bland, lacks flavor. How do you mess up a guacamole?! It needed more salt and lime, all we could taste was the avocado. The torta was a soggy mess and greasy, lacked any potential. There is just a lack of seasoning throughout the cooking. We should have gone to Taco Bell instead..

  • George H.

The steak on the tacos were very dry and incredibly salty. The only thing they have that resembles hot sauce is their green sauce and my 10 year old daughter found it to be mild and she doesnt even like hot and spicy foods. The carnitas were incredibly greasy, dry and over cooked. The guacamole was very plain and very bland. For what they charge I expected much better food. Don't know if I will return.

OH MY GOD! WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE? DES PLAINES TBK IS AMAZING! ::cough cough:: Ok, I'll calm down now. Seriously, I come here a lot at all hours of the day and night and always, always get good food, friendly service, and fresh horchata. It blows my goddamn mind that a local Taco Bell is getting more stars than this place. Taco Bell serves grade F meat that is so processed, it needs a caking agent in order to continue resembling meat! Come on! TBK is always generous with their toppings, too. When I eat a taco here, there's just too much tasty stuff in it, and I end up forking up a bunch of fallen tasty bits out of my basket when I finish. Did I mention they have horchata? Did I mention they are open 24/7? Did I mention it BEATS THE HELL out of freakin' Taco Bell?!? They also have their very own spacious parking lot with two points of egress and high chairs for kids. Go! Drink horchata! Eat tacos! Have burritos! Your mouth with swear fealty to His Royal Highness, the Taco Burrito King.

The beans tasted like cigarettes or something. It was so gross. Not coming here anymore.

  • nick c.

Stopped in for lunch, was hesitant because of the ratings. Well the ratings don't lie. I got two steak tacos which are pretty big but has no taste whatsoever. I added sauce to it and still didn't taste any flavor. My suggestion is keep driving and find a better place.

    (1)
  • Erick P.

I don't know what the hype about this place was...?? Their always busy but their food sucks. I went here for lunch and honestly it was just below average and the prices are expensive. I got the double steak burrito and it was below average, I don't know why my friends thought TBK was the best Mexican place ever because its not. There way better Mexican food places with cheaper prices. I wont be going back here.

  • Aca P.

OMG @ ELIZABETH W you must have never had a mother to cook you a meal. I like an idiot went here today again just cause my coworker was hungry and we work nearby. I should have read my own review before I let him go to this place today to waste my money. Once again a disappointing meal. It was funny though I didn't start eating yet and turned around and looked at my coworker after he bit into his quesadilla 2 times. His face said it all. I regret the 3 nicely stuffed tacos that had ZERO flavor/taster etc. Even after adding the green crap all it tasted like was grass from the fields at Maine West. WOW I have to say to anyone crazy enough to give this joint 5 of anything let alone 5 stars. PLEASE STAY AWAY go to TACO BELL down the street. or even try Sam's Club Pizza across the street. it will be better then any of this.

  • Jeschelle-Marc M.

i don't understand why this tbk has poor rating. i love the taco!!! and it's open 24 hours a day!!!

    (4)
  • Linda N.

Doubtful I will return. I got a burrito plate. Total 9.99. I ate half of my steak burrito. And I may not have if I wasn't so hungry. Like other raters say...it just didnt taste right. Not flavorful (low quality meat) and was sorta greasyas I am not used to taking a bite of burrito and seeing an orangy ooze drip onto the paper. (no hot sauce!) I did enjoy the rice and beans or this would make it one star. Also, the staff is the least friendly I have seen a long time. This place needs serious work in many areas to be acceptable. Friends who live nearby have been more than 3 times and twice their order was goofed. Not acceptable. If you are looking for the best steak tacos- check out Las Asadas next to the Old McDonalds.

  • Janet V.

I love the food from TBK, but this specific location grosses me out. The restaurant is really big but they need to be a little more clean. I have come at different times of day including lunch time, dinner and late night. I have noticed food on tables and on the floor. The staff seems pretty friendly but cleanliness in a restaurant is very important.

    (2)
  • Rachel W.

I came here on a Saturday evening (6:30-ish) with a friend. We ordered burritos to-go. Typically my husband picks up dinner for us, so this was my first time physically going into the restaurant. I really wasn't impressed. I found the location to be somewhat dirty and there were 5 employees standing around not doing much of anything. The cashier was friendly, but not overly friendly. The head cook was very matter-of-fact with the other employees and I guess I didn't care for that either. I prefer Chipotle and Qdoba to TBK. I like the fact that I can get black beans and/or pinto beans, not just refried. My burrito was wrapped pretty poorly and I ended up eating it with a fork instead...and it was just a veggie burrito. I don't know about anyone else, but the ingredients taste sub-par to me compared to the competition.

    (2)
  • Jackie S.

Chicken burrito- less than average Al pastor tacos- decent Chips and salsa: FAIL. asked for pico de gallo on a pick up order. Got back to work and opened it up and the pico was ALL JALAPEÑOS with two tiny slices of onion. No tomatoes. No cilantro. No thank you. TBK- I work right across the street... So disappointed

It pains me to write this review. However, after the last three visits I will no longer do business with this establishment. This place used to be my favorite place to cure my late-night taco cravings. The last three visits, my father and I have gotten seriously ill. I'm unsure if the meat or the veggies are to blame, but I will not gamble on this place again. The other reviews are right. The steak looks and tastes like my dogs food. I'm not sure if they switched suppliers or what, but it's in no way USDA meat. The tacos and burritos have been dripping in grease and topped with wilted tomatoes, lettuce, and spoiled sour cream. It is so sad that they have ruined a nice establishment. The food is also tasteless, as other reviews have mentioned. It's sad when a place goes cheap to the point of losing customers! I'm not going to risk getting food poisoning again at this establishment. I'll go down the street to Las Asadas, or head to chipotle. Also, the cooks there have a very bad attitude. You feel very uncomfortable picking up food there. The only person who was very friendly was the woman at the register. She'd always talk to me and was so sweet! However, I haven't seen her in ages! Either new management or cheap new ingredients, either way a terrible loss! It's not worth getting sick to the point of going to a ER. Sorry TBK, but you need to shape it up!

    (1)
  • Gus C.

This place is garbage, I will never eat here "ever". The very next day I got food poison from this shit hole place. I was throwing up and shitting non-stop. I couldn't keep anything down. Someone needs to send the health department to this dirty place. I don't live in Chicago, I'm from southern Cali and every place have a letter grade, that you can seem right before you walk into it. I was sick for two and half days.. If your hungry it's better to eat a pile of shit, then eat any of this place food.

  • Sabrina H.

This place is near where I work but I was always hesitant to try it. I'm so glad I finally gave it a shot because it's a convenient fast food type of Mexican restaurant that's open 24 hours. I got the fish taco platter which was delicious and worth the price. Unfortunately my friend got cheese nachos which tasted quite generic. All in all I would definitely go back!

I have been to this location less than a handful of times and NEVER EVER EVER again! I will stick to the Niles location or if I am ever in the city, will go to one of those. This last visit was the one that took the cake though. I really wanted Mexican food (was thinking of to Oro de Gallo(?)(Lee/Algonquin), but that is out of the way. Also considered Los Compadres (Algonquin/Dempster), but that is across the street from me, so I have it often. So TBK it was. This place is clean, and although it is pricey, the portions are huge. That is where the positives stop. I went Monday and the registers were down (only cash). I NEVER have cash on me...but damnit, I did that day. So, I ordered a chorizo taco and a king size steak burrito. The taco is HUGE. With all that crap on it though, you can hardly taste the meat. It is essentially a salad with cheese and sour cream and a little chorizo. The corn tortilla was EXTREMELY bland, honestly, it was the equivalent of water (the taste). So, I finish the taco, minus some of the tortilla. Now, I want to try the burrito. I cut off a third and begin to eat. As I'm eating it, I notice something off about the meat. Finally, I realize that it is essentially the same quality/taste as that canned beef stew meat! SICK!!! I tossed the rest of that portion and still have 2/3 of the burrito left. This is rare for me as I am a HUGE burrito and Mexican food person.

THIS PLACE IS A BUST!! The steak was awful and was watery and tasted like canned food. We also had a chicken burrito that tasted awful. It tasted like tuna. Never come to this place unless you want a cup of water. The quesadilla tasted very bad the cheese had no taste.

Guys working the morning shift are awesome. Friendly, good-spirited, and the food was well prepared.

    (4)
  • Robert G.

The good is not bad, cooked to order, good portions, good value. The main issue is this place is always dirty. The floors are always a mess, condiment station filthy and you have to walk around to find a clean table. If this is how they treat the eating area, what is the kitchen look like. I feel like the place has allot of potential, they just need a manager who cares.

    (2)
  • Marwan M.

The food is awesome, price is OK but really worth it. Food came in about 5 mins (ordered 2 king size burritos), They always take care of you. I am surprised to see the reviews on here, if everyone left a review you would have mostly 5 stars because the lower reviews are just people who want to be heard.

    (5)
  • miro j.

wont go back again..... i came in there for my morning breakfast.. and they r blasting music.... tables are filty.. i dont kno why they bothered to open this is gross.... THEY TOUCH THE CASH REGISTER.. THEN THEY TOUCH UR FOOD.. GROSS AND NO GLOVES? GROSS...

Very dirty dining area, the place is a mess do not go average food not recommend. Very low standards the manager obviously does not care.

    (1)
  • Danny M.

This place sucks bad! Matter of fact all TBK's really are horrible. The food is plain bad. Tiny little niblets of fatty steak as your meat, the most bland rice I ever had and yea, I am at a loss of words how so many people dig this place?!?! In this case, 1 star is 1 too many!

    (1)
  • Ricky J.

They say after the bar is the best time to have this type of food but absolutely NOT I even gave them another chance going sober but their meat was dry the tortillas were hard I don't know if they dont believe in training their employees but the place was dirty the guy making the food kept touching his face totally off putting I will definitely not be going back -5/5 stars. NEXT!!!!!

    (1)
  • Hector M.

I've only been here twice and both times have been a great experience. The food is always freshly made seasoned right and very tasty. The people who work there are knowledgeable and friendly.

    (4)
  • Virginia D.

My girlfriends & I went there a month ago for the first time & thought their food was great!!! In fact, we couldn't get over how generous their were - the burritos were HUGE and so were the nachos grande!!! Sure beats Taco Bell, here you have authentic Mexican food!!! Prices were pretty reasonable and the nice thing is that you can go there whenever that craving strikes, since they're open 24-7!!!

    (5)
  • Arletta C.

It's a Mexican place that is open 24 hours a day (+2 stars)! Awesome! I think this my new local late night hangout. I will say that it's a little expensive for a fast food Mexican place (-1 star). The place is big, clean and the employees behind the counter are friendly (+2 stars). I ordered the steak taco diner which came with two tacos (lettuce, cheese, sour cream, tomatoes) and rice and beans on the side. I thought the tacos were A-OK. I did enjoy the Horchata (rice drink)! Mmmm... I usually add a lot of cinnamon when I drink Horchata, but they didn't have cinnamon to add.

    (3)
  • Jess F.

This place is pricey for a burrito place. I had a steak burrito, chips and salsa and a small drink and it was 12 dollars. Burrito was so-so and chips and salsa were awful... I don't think I would be back since I know of many better burrito places.

Some time has passed, and I gotta say...these guys really improved their quality :-) I am writing this update based on several visits following my huge disappointment, either spontaneous ones with bunch of starving friends in the middle of the night with no other place open around, or just simple pick up after work....Their service got much better, it is very comparable to other TBK's now :-) The lady that often works the register is super nice and the guys working the grill are not screwing the orders any more-in fact, they make the best steak fajitas which have much more flavor then before, and they have a lot of crispy delicious peppers in it :-) They never hesitate to give you extra hot sauces to go, and the food is made in super speed :-) Thank you for upgrading your service guys!!!! You got the new loyal customer ( with LOTS of friends) who really appreciates it :-)

Drawn in by several friends' reviews and decent amount of vegetarian options. Finally swung by today, and when I approached the counter, the woman was on her personal cell phone and didn't say a word to me. She just waited for my order to type it in, and proceeded with her phone conversation. I ordered the junior vegetarian burrito. The tortilla was old/dry, veggies tasted like whatever was already caked on the grill. Totally nast. If I ever go back to TBK, it will be at a different location.

If you go here you're probably drunk. Almost puked when I ate their re fried beans, the lettuce tastes like it's been in a jar for 2 months.

Awful, I felt sick to my stomach after having a Steak burrito that seemed to be half cooked.

    (1)
  • John P.

food sucks. period. service? dont even get me started. the chubby lady at the register looks mean as hell and her attitude is horrible. she literally was on the phone for like 10 second, before she took my order, as i stood right in front of her

  • Jason K.

I've been going to various TBK locations for many years but had a bad experience going to the Des Plaines location. The Taco Burrito King website listed a monthly special quesadilla for $1.89, we ordered 2 on the phone as "the monthly special quesadilla" and when we get there after paying the bill we notice we were charged $2.75. Instead of correcting it the cashier tells us the special is old. This seems like fraud to me. Besides that we ordered extra sour cream on our burritos and were charged for it, when we got home there was definitely no extra sour cream. This is the least satisfying Taco Burrito King I've been to.

Got a torta (Mexican sandwich), which was huge for the price. It tasted meh. There are so many other good Mexican places in the area with similar prices, so I will be skipping this one.

truly tragic. please do not waste your time nor money here. the order was so way off from what we requested is laughable. I ordered a veggie burrito with multiple ingredients and got a huge burrito with only cheese and guac in side... and cold. not heated at all.... the guac is so brown I cant believe they serve this. also ordered a side of the guac and its so brown its barely green. what a waste. all 4 of us cant eat what we ordered. honestly one of the worst fast food taqueria experiences ive ever had... and burritos are my staple. I am coming back in to edit 4 hours later: I still cant stop thinking about how bad the food was at Taco Burrito King. I was served a chilled burrito, with cheese and brown guacamole--so disgusting. ill add that when I got home, I threw the 'burrito' out after 2 bites and went to El Famous and ordered another round.

I live down the street and was excited when they opened. My first attempt, there was no parking, finally I made it in and the line was out the door and I left. The second time I went around 2:00 and ordered 3 tacos and almost fell down when my bill was $8.00. I got home, and it was topped with a glob of ice cold sour cream and shredded cheese that wasn't even Mexican cheese. Now my tacos are cold, and the flour tortilla was hard and dry. I will never go back again. I will stick to my favorite place down the street on Oakton called Taqueria Arenda. Place is super clean, really cheap and always delicious .

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
